Spring 2018 Honda Scholars Event

Posted:

Maximizing the student experience is an important goal for many OSU engineering students.  The Honda scholars that attended the April 2018 spring event heard about three on-campus programs that can help them achieve that goal through real-world experience with business and industry.

Paul Reeder from the Institute for Materials Research (IMR) invited students to participate in the upcoming May Innovate-O-Thon with Honda. The weeklong externship program is scheduled for May 7-11 and will focus on creating innovative solutions to Honda’s mobility needs by forming interdisciplinary teams from OSU and central Ohio community colleges. Reeder described the event as an “intense sprint” that consists of real business workshops and engagement with a team and Honda business leaders to go from concept to prototype. Initial Innovate-o-Thons sponsored by Proctor & Gamble and Black & Decker resulted in patent ideas at the end of the program, according to Reeder.

The Center for Design and Manufacturing Excellence (CDME) offers an Experiential Entrepreneurship Education Program, or E3, that pairs students with industry partners to participate in research projects and entrepreneurial learning.

Bob Rhodes, the instructor for the College of Engineering Capstone program, explained the types of capstone courses available to students in their 4th year, including multi-disciplinary and product design. He noted that Honda has sponsored a record 14 capstone projects this year.

The Honda scholars wrapped up the 17-18 academic year by recognizing graduating seniors and networking with staff from the Honda-student collaboration programs.
